Thomas is a happy 4 year old with severe cerebral palsy, dystonia, epilepsy and cortical visual impairment. He loves spending time with his family, especially his two younger siblings, Joe and Vera and his dog, Bella.
He attends school during the year and loves his teacher, classmates and taking part in group activities. Thomas has also has been involved with the Step by Step Early Intervention Society since 2014 by taking part in the ‘Play n Chat’ group with several other children and their parents.
One of Thomas’ biggest challenges is communication. Due to his impaired motor functions, Thomas cannot communicate in typical ways (non-verbal). Our family has been working very hard to learn strategies to help him be able to express his wants and needs as well as find ways that he can play with some toys or games independently . Variety Alberta supported Thomas by purchasing a switch adapted iPad assistive device to support his independent play and build communication skills.
